Margrit and Fred Polak share how their mother, Ina Soep, fell in love with her future husband Jaap Polak in Westerbork, survived Bergen-Belsen, and stayed in touch with many fellow survivors

Margrit and Fred Polak tell the story of their mother, Ina Soep, and her family. How Ina fell in love with her future husband, Jaap Polak, first in Westerbork and later in Bergen-Belsen. How Jaap and Ina, along with her sister and parents, managed to survive the horrific train ride from Bergen-Belsen. In the summer of 1945, Ina returned with her family to their home on J.J. Viottastraat. It became a place where survivors found each other.
After emigrating to the United States, Ina stayed in touch with many fellow survivors until her death in 2014. Jaap continued to speak about his wartime experiences well into old age at events across the U.S.

This program is developed in partnership with Dienke Hondius and Jan Erik Dubbelman.
