The Rivierenbuurt became one of Amsterdam’s three Jewish neighbourhoods in 1942. After “the star” was introduced, our neighbourhood, with its 17,000 Jewish residents, was also mockingly called “the Milky Way”.
Anne Frank’s monument on Merwedeplein symbolises the 14,000 neighbourhood residents who were murdered. The statue also stands there to warn us against intolerance, anti-Semitism and racism.
