2023 marks the 80th anniversary of the great April May strike, when workers from all over the Netherlands went on strike to protest against the war. The strike started in Hengelo at the Stork factories and then spread nationwide. Workers in Amsterdam also went on strike to join the protest. The walk follows some of the traces that they left.
World War II left its marks everywhere in Amsterdam, and a walk along these traces is a reminder not to forget. Gijs Stork and Floor van Spaendonck create walks through Amsterdam that are published in Het Parool and walking books. Their walks mix history, art and recent developments. Many followers enjoy walking these routes in order to see the city from different perspectives. In recent years, the May 4 walks have featured war memorials and the women who played a leading role in the resistance in the capital. This time, the walk focuses on the many people who resisted by striking or rioting.
