VOORSTELLING 5 mei 19.30 uur AFGELAST

Once We Were Birds: A cross-media project about inclusion

According to an ancient myth, Roma and Sinti were once birds. They can no longer fly, but their soul is still that of a bird. In reality they were outlaws: chased, excluded and destroyed. That the myth is still alive is indicative of their desire for freedom.

The cross-media project – Once We Were Birds – tells the story of Roma and Sinti, long colloquially referred to as ‘Gypsies’, and their long history of exclusion and discrimination. From 4 to 16 May 2022 you will find an installation, a photo exhibition, theater performances and audio stories about Roma and Sinti on the Jonas Daniël Meijerplein in Amsterdam. The project can be viewed during this entire period. The theater performance in collaboration with Theater Na de Dam will be played on May 4, May 5 and on the day of the special Roma and Sinti commemoration on May 16.

Social inclusion is impossible without cultural inclusion, according to Nieuw Water, the foundation behind the project. The project uses different art disciplines to build bridges and connections. In this way, Nieuw Water hopes to contribute to raising awareness of the importance of a democratic and tolerant society. Not only as a history lesson, but also as a warning in this time of polarization.

Broadly speaking, this is done through stories about how and why Roma and Sinti probably got adrift some 1,000 years ago. Once we were birds highlights the mechanisms of labelling, exclusion and discrimination against Roma and Sinti that were used in the run-up to and during the Second World War. A music theater performance, live radio and TV broadcastings make the link to the present. The project examines, among other things, the role that imagery and social media play. Different images and new sounds are used to break stereotypes and clichés.

The ‘Gypsy Holocaust’ was the climax of a centuries-long process of stigmatization. From the 1920s onwards, more and more drastic measures were devised in Germany to solve ‘the gypsy problem’. From labor camps to identity cards and from a ‘central office for the fight against gypsies’ to a ‘final solution to the gypsy plague’. But even before the German occupation, Roma and Sinti had a hard time in the Netherlands, since 1928 an active policy against ‘Gypsies’ had been pursued in our country. To this day, Roma and Sinti struggle with deprivation and active policies against their lifestyle.

Nieuw Water created this installation in close collaboration with Roma and Sinti. Also involved are: the Jewish Cultural Quarter, Portuguese Synagogue, Radio Patrin, AT5, Salto, Theater Na de Dam and Zonaluma.

This project was made possible with funding from the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS), Prins Berhard Cultuurfonds Noord-Holland, VSBfonds, NORMA Feniks Fonds, vfonds, Stichting Anba.
