Op zondag 29 januari 2023 organiseert het Nederlands Auschwitz Comité de jaarlijkse Nationale Holocaust Herdenking bij het Spiegelmonument ‘Nooit Meer Auschwitz’ in het Wertheimpark in Amsterdam. Het is dan 78 jaar geleden dat concentratie- en vernietigingskamp Auschwitz, hét internationale symbool van de Holocaust, werd bevrijd.
Op 1 november 2005 riep Kofi Annan, toenmalig secretaris-generaal van de Verenigde Naties, de bevrijdingsdatum van Auschwitz, 27 januari 1945, uit tot een internationale dag van herdenking: The Holocaust Memorial Day. Rondom deze dag worden in Nederland door vele organisaties activiteiten georganiseerd. Hier vind je een overzicht van alle betrokken organisaties.

12:30 uur Einde herdenking
Na de officiële kranslegging is er voor iedereen tijdens het défilé gelegenheid om een krans of bloemen op het monument te leggen.
Wandeling Tegen het vergeten
Op 29 januari, aansluitend aan de herdenking, organiseert Theater Na de Dam een speciale wandeling Tegen het vergeten.
Live televisie-uitzending
De NOS wijdt op zondag 29 januari twee uitzendingen aan de Nationale Holocaust Herdenking 2023. Een rechtstreeks verslag overdag en een uitgebreide terugblik in de vooravond. De presentatie van beide programma’s is in handen van Rob Trip. In de avonduitzending wordt niet alleen teruggeblikt op de herdenking in het Wertheimpark, maar ook op het Theatre of Remembrance en de ‘theatrale route’ die jongeren, aansluitend aan de herdenking, lopen naar het Nationaal Holocaust Namenmonument aan de Weesperstraat.
In beide uitzendingen is ook aandacht voor de gebeurtenissen rond Het Apeldoornsche Bosch, een Joodse inrichting voor geestelijke gezondheidszorg. In 2023 is het 80 jaar geleden dat de instelling op last van de Duitse bezetter werd ontruimd. Meer dan 1300 patiënten en verzorgenden gingen per trein rechtstreeks naar Auschwitz, waar ze direct na aankomst werden vermoord. Het is de enige deportatie die uit Nederland vertrok waarvan geen transportlijst bestaat. Daarom wordt nog altijd onderzoek gedaan naar wie de slachtoffers precies waren.

On Sunday 29 January 2023, the Dutch Auschwitz Committee will organise the annual National Holocaust Commemoration at the Mirror Monument ‘Never Again Auschwitz’ in Amsterdam’s Wertheim Park. It will then be 78 years since concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz, the international symbol of the Holocaust, was liberated.

After the official wreath-laying, there will be an opportunity for everyone to lay a wreath or flowers on the monument during the défilé.
Live television broadcast
NOS will devote two broadcasts to the National Holocaust Commemoration 2023 on Sunday 29 January. A live report during the day and an extensive retrospective in the early evening. Both programmes will be presented by Rob Trip. The evening broadcast not only looks back at the commemoration in Wertheim Park, but also at the Theatre of Remembrance and the ‘theatrical route’ that young people walk to the National Holocaust Names Monument on Weesperstraat, following the commemoration.
Both broadcasts also focus on the events surrounding Het Apeldoornsche Bosch, a Jewish mental health institution. In 2023, it will be 80 years since the institution was evacuated by order of the German occupier. More than 1,300 patients and carers went by train directly to Auschwitz, where they were murdered immediately upon arrival. It is the only deportation that left the Netherlands for which no transport list exists. Therefore, research is still underway to find out exactly who the victims were.
