In 1988 schreef Steve Reich (New York, 1936) het driedelige ‘Different Trains’ voor het Kronos Quartet. De titel verwijst naar een simpele maar krachtige tegenstelling: een joodse jongen, Steve Reich, reist tussen 1939 en 1942 heen en weer tussen New York en Los Angeles en realiseert zich vele jaren later: had hij in diezelfde periode als joodse jongen in Europa gewoond, dan zou hij met andere treinen en naar andere bestemmingen hebben gereden.
De compositie bevat klankverwijzingen naar treinen en luchtaanvallen, tekstfrases, gesynchroniseerd met muzikale thema’s in het strijkkwartet. In de Oude Kerk is Different Trains te horen zonder filmspoor, in de leegte van de grootse en tegelijk intieme kerkruimte. Uitgevoerd door het Mondriaan Kwartet.
Different Trains wordt voorafgegaan door het 8e Strijkkwartet van Dmitri Sjostakovitsj. Sjostakovitsj draagt het werk op “aan de slachtoffers van fascisme en oorlog”. Volgens ingewijden verwees hij ook naar alle slachtoffers van totalitarisme, en indirect ook naar zichzelf. In die tijd stond hij als toonaangevend componist onder toezicht van de Russische autoriteiten en zou hij overwogen hebben zelfmoord te plegen.

The title refers to a simple yet powerful contradiction: a Jewish boy, Steve Reich, travels back and forth between New York and Los Angeles between 1939 and 1942 and realizes many years later: had he lived in Europe during that same period as a Jewish boy, then he would have ridden on other trains and to other destinations.
The composition contains sound references to trains and air raids, phrases of text, synchronized with musical themes in the string quartet. In the Oude Kerk, Different Trains can be heard without a film track, in the emptiness of the grand and at the same time intimate church space. Performed by the Mondriaan Quartet.
Different Trains is preceded by Dmitri Shostakovich’s 8th String Quartet. Shostakovich dedicates the work “to the victims of fascism and war”. According to insiders, he also made a reference to all victims of totalitarianism, and indirectly also referred to himself. At that time, as a leading composer, he was under the supervision of the Russian authorities and is said to have considered taking his own life.
